What are UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module) are five variants of URL parameters used by marketers to track the effectiveness of online marketing campaigns across traffic sources and publishing media.

By appending these tags to your URLs, tools like Google Analytics 4 (GA4) can accurately categorize incoming traffic, showing you exactly which ads, emails, or social posts are driving visitors and conversions.

Accurate Attribution
Know exactly which campaigns drive ROI instead of relying on direct or generic referral traffic data.
GA4 Integration
Our tool supports the new GA4 specific parameters like creative_format and marketing_tactic.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1 Why should I use the Force Lowercase option?
Google Analytics is case-sensitive. This means that "Email" and "email" will show up as two separate mediums in your reports. Enforcing lowercase ensures your data remains clean and consolidated.
2 What is the difference between source and medium?
Source is *where* the traffic comes from (e.g. google, facebook, newsletter). Medium is *how* the traffic gets there (e.g. cpc, banner, email).
3 Which fields are absolutely required?
The Website URL and Campaign Source (utm_source) are strictly required. If you omit the source, Google Analytics may not properly categorize the traffic. However, it is highly recommended to also include the Medium and Campaign Name.
4 What are the new GA4 parameters?
GA4 introduced three new parameters for more granular tracking: utm_source_platform (the platform responsible), utm_creative_format (display, video, native), and utm_marketing_tactic (remarketing, prospecting).
5 Will spaces break my URL?
Spaces in URLs are converted to %20 when encoded. While valid, this makes URLs messy and harder to read. It is a best practice to use hyphens (-) or underscores (_) to separate words.
