Most link-building advice is completely divorced from reality. "Just email 500 people and ask for a link!" If you have tried this recently, you know the average cold outreach reply rate sits firmly in the single digits—often around 1% to 2% if you lack a massive brand.

You cannot brute-force your way to authority anymore.

But you also cannot rank without links. So, what actually works? You need to figure out exactly who is linking to the people outranking you, and why. You need to learn how to find competitor backlinks and steal their SEO strategy, not just spam their contacts.

Ignore the Vanity Metrics

When you dump a competitor into a backlink tool, you will see a wall of metrics. Domain Authority (DA). Page Authority (PA). Ignore them for a second.

Domain Authority is a Moz metric. It is a third-party proxy, not a Google ranking factor. A DA 20 blog written by an actual expert in your narrow niche is often worth more than a DA 80 generic news site.

And do not automatically filter out "nofollow" links. Since 2019, Google treats nofollow as a hint, not a strict directive. A nofollow link from a highly relevant Wikipedia page or a top-tier publication still drives traffic and sends trust signals.

The Forensic Approach

Stop looking for easy directories. Start looking for patterns.

When I analyze a competitor, I am looking for exactly three things:

  • Digital PR wins. Are they getting links from journalists? What data or study did they pitch to get it? I will run a bigger, better study next quarter.
  • Unlinked mentions. Where are people talking about them but failing to link? If their brand is recognized, yours can be too.
  • Resource pages they sponsor. Many "Best tools" pages are pay-to-play. I want to find those pages and see what it costs to get listed.

Run a Forensic Audit on Your Biggest Rival

Drop their domain into the checker. Filter out the noise. Find the exact pages giving them authority.

Analyze Competitor Backlinks

Next Step

Pick the competitor ranking #1 for your most lucrative keyword. Drop their URL into the checker. Export their top 50 referring domains. Discard the spam, the aggregators, and the social profiles. Find the three actual blogs that linked to them editorially. Email those three editors with a pitch that genuinely adds value to their site.
